How do I find the right annuity company phone number?

Start with your contract or most recent annual statement. The issuing insurance company’s legal name is printed on the first page, and it is often longer than the brand name.

• Match the full legal name. “Jackson National Life Insurance Company” and “Jackson National Life of New York” are separate companies with separate numbers.
• Check for a New York company. If you bought your annuity in New York, it was probably issued by the carrier’s New York subsidiary.
• Use the number on your statement first. Carriers sometimes route contracts to a dedicated service center, and your statement shows the right one.

What should I have ready when I call?

Carriers verify your identity before they discuss a contract. Having these items in front of you shortens the call.

• Contract or policy number from your statement or contract.
• Owner details: full name, date of birth, address on file and the last four digits of the Social Security number.
• Your request in one sentence, such as “I need my surrender value” or “I want to change my beneficiary.”
• For a death claim: a certified death certificate and the beneficiary’s contact information.

Ask the representative to mail or email a confirmation of any change. Write down the date, the representative’s name and any reference number.

What if my annuity company was sold or renamed?

Your contract stays in force when a carrier is sold, merged or renamed. The guarantees transfer with it, and a new company may handle the service. These are some of the most common name changes:

• Brighthouse Financial was spun off from MetLife in 2017 and now services many older MetLife retail annuities.
• Corebridge Financial is the former AIG Life & Retirement business. It includes American General Life and VALIC.
• Talcott Resolution holds the annuity business Hartford sold in 2018.
• Venerable bought Voya’s variable annuity business in 2018. Voya Insurance and Annuity Company became Venerable Insurance and Annuity Company.
• Everlake Life is the former Allstate Life Insurance Company, sold in 2021.
• Fortitude Life Insurance & Annuity Company took over a block of Prudential variable annuities in 2022.
• MassMutual Ascend is the former Great American Life Insurance Company.
• Delaware Life took over the Sun Life U.S. annuity business in 2013.

Why are there two phone numbers for some carriers?

Most carriers have one line for contract owners and another for licensed agents. Owners should use the customer service line. The agent line is for appointments, sales and commission questions.

Can a closed annuity company still pay my annuity?

Yes. A carrier that is closed to new business still services existing contracts and pays claims. If it sold the business, the buyer takes over the contract with the same guarantees.
